Aurora (2011) flute and horn
Aurora is titled after the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. The scene is set as a frozen winter landscape with both instruments making "wind" sounds. As pitches are introduced, we begin to see flickerings of colors in the night sky. At the climax of the piece, the lights encompass the entire sky, filling it with a cacophony of colors. The piece ends calmly as dawn approaches, the lights laying in wait for the coming evening.
Premiered: March 6, 2011 at the Riverside Recital Hall at the University of Iowa by Nora Epping (flute) and Evan Grulke (horn). Performed in April 2011 by Emily Fuglestad (flute) and Cameron Douthitt (horn) at the NIU recital hall.
